Both AliExpress and Amazon are e-commerce giants. But they have completely different philosophies, different price levels and different purchase risks. Which one to pick depends mostly on what you’re looking for.
Prices - AliExpress wins, but there’s a catch
AliExpress usually offers much lower base prices - a product that costs 20 EUR on Amazon you might find for 5–8 EUR on AliExpress. The difference comes from buying directly from Chinese manufacturers without middlemen.
The catch: to the AliExpress price you have to add VAT and possible customs duty for orders over 150 EUR. Amazon usually includes these costs at checkout. So the total difference is smaller than it first looks - though AliExpress still often comes out cheaper.
Delivery time - Amazon clearly wins
This is the biggest difference between the platforms. Amazon Prime delivers parcels next day or within 2–3 days. Without Prime - usually 3–7 days from European warehouses.
AliExpress Standard Shipping is 15–30 days. The express option (DHL) cuts that to 5–10 days but costs extra. If time matters, Amazon is more convenient. If you can wait, AliExpress is cheaper.
Product quality
Amazon sells both well-known brands (Samsung, Bosch, Philips) and Chinese no-names. You can be confident that what’s described meets EU standards - because Amazon verifies sellers and removes non-compliant products.
On AliExpress you mostly buy from Chinese manufacturers without CE certificates. For many categories (cables, accessories, home goods) that doesn’t matter. For electronics, electrical devices or toys - it’s worth checking whether the product has the proper certificates.
Important
Always check whether an AliExpress product has a CE certificate if you plug it into mains power. No certificate is a potential safety hazard.
Returns and complaints
Amazon has one of the best return policies on the market - 30 days to return without giving a reason, and a fast refund. If a product arrives damaged, a replacement or refund is often possible within 24 hours.
AliExpress offers buyer protection, but the dispute process takes 5–15 business days and requires evidence (photos, recordings). The seller gets a chance to respond before the platform decides. It works, but takes more patience.
When to choose AliExpress
- You’re after accessories, gadgets or unbranded products - where price matters more than the logo.
- You can wait 2–4 weeks for delivery.
- You’re buying something you can judge visually on arrival (clothes, accessories, decorations).
- You’re after home, garden or kitchen items - here Chinese quality is good enough.
- You have the budget and want to test a product before buying a pricier brand.
When to choose Amazon
- You need the product fast - in a few days, not a month.
- You’re buying electronics, electrical devices or toys for children - safety is the priority.
- You’re buying branded products (Apple, Sony, Lego) - on AliExpress the counterfeit risk is real.
- You want a guarantee of an easy return without arguing with the seller.
- You’re buying a gift for a specific date - you can’t risk a delay.
Summary
AliExpress and Amazon aren’t in direct competition - they serve different needs. Most experienced buyers use both: AliExpress for cheap accessories and gadgets, Amazon for branded products and urgent orders.
The best strategy is to compare specific products on both platforms before buying. After VAT and shipping, the price difference is sometimes just a few euros - and then Amazon’s delivery speed and return policy can tip the balance.
